Cycling on the Atherton Tablelands

Following is a brief overview of some of the off road circuits which can be enjoyed by cyclists on the Atherton Tablelands. For additional information on local cycling please vist the excellent site www.cycletouring.wetpaint.com.

Neither this overview or the cycle touring site purport to be comprehensive lists of all rides available in the Tablelands Region and visitor feedback in respect of distances, technical difficulty and any other information would be appreciated. Cycle Lamb Range

Tinaroo - Lake Tinaroo and Lamb Ranges circuits

Cycling; 2 - 3 days mainly on formed gravel roads in the superb Lamb Ranges and Danbulla Forest adjacent to Lake Tinaroo.

Cycle Crater Lakes

Yungaburra - Crater Lakes circuits

Cycling; 2 - 3 days mainly on bitumen through rainforest and open farmland, visit and swim in extint volcanic craters and ride through Heritage Listed rainforest to the base of Queensland's Highest mountain Mt. Bartle Frere

Cycle Millaa Millaa

Millaa Millaa - Dairyland and Waterfalls circuits

Cycling; 2 - 3 days mainly on bitumen through open farmland, visit magnificent waterfalls, 50km return ride down the Palmerston Highway through heritage listed rainforest to Camu Canopy walk and on final day ride 25 km on bitumen to Ravenshoe via Old Palmerston Highway

Please note; Riding distances and times for above locations are variable depending on interests, level of fitness and seasonal conditions. Short rides are generally up to 20 km with add on loops enabling rides of 50 - 75 km.

Cycle Lappa Junction

Ravenshoe - Outback Experience

Cycling; 3-4 days. Possible 3 day itinerary - Day 1 - approximately 45km on bitumen from Ravenshoe to Mount Garnet. Day 2 - approximately 60 km gravel on former Mount Garnet to Lappa rail corridor. Overnight bush camping adjacent to Emu Creek and day 3 - 70km ride on gravel from Petford to Herberton

Please note; Riding times for the above is variable depending on level of fitness and seasonal conditions. It is recommended that this ride be undertaken only in cool winter months between May and September. Support in the form of additional water and food supplies as well as first aid provisions and communications facility is essential.

Cycling Herberton

Herberton - Mountainbike Central

Cycling; 2 days, mainly technical sclerophyll forest rides Distances; variable between 15 km and 25km Day 2/3 - ride on bitumen to Atherton via Herberton Range

Cycle Atherton

Atherton

Cycling - 2 days, part technical, part non technical through rainforest and sclerophyll forest in Herberton Ranges

Please note; Riding distances and times for above 2 locations are variable depending on interests, level of fitness and seasonal conditions. Short rides are generally up to 15 km with add on loops enabling longer rides of up to 75 km.
